KABUL— The Taliban issued a statement claiming to have killed four American soldiers in what was referred to as an “insider attack.”
The shooter, an Afghan Commando, turned on U.S. forces, belonging to the 1o1st Airborne division, within an eastern district of Nangarhar province. The joint effort led by the American coalition to dislodge Islamic State militants from their stronghold has been ongoing for months. Rebel opposition fled into the rough mountain terrain after U.S. deployed the the GBU-43/B (MOAB) bomb, the largest non-nuclear weapon within its arsenal, on a cave-and-tunnel complex in April. Earlier the same day, Afghanistan officials filed reports that a U.S. airstrike killed at least two Afghan policemen and wounding three others in the province of Helmand. the U.S. military expressed regret regarding the casualties and are investigating the incident.
